General Questions
Will my personal information be kept private?
Yes, it will remain confidential. We do not sell, rent, lease or give
away your personal information to third parties, nor do we send out
spam (unwanted commercial bulk e-mail). In addition, most (if not all)
customer information is encrypted using the Triple DES algorithm and
is stored separately from our servers. For more information, please
see our Privacy Policy.
How much hosting experience do you have?
We have been hosting Web sites for about two years, have used ActiveWorlds
for over six years and have been hosting ActiveWorlds bots, worlds and
object paths for at least four years. Suffice it to say, we are qualifed
in the hosting department.
Do you charge setup fees?
No, setup is free for all of our services.
Where are your servers located?
Our three servers are spread across the United States, in the states
of Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania. For more information, please see
the Network Information page.
What type of Internet connectivity do you have?
Please see the Network Information page for a complete answer to this question.
Which operating systems do your servers use?
All of our servers use Linux except for the ActiveWorlds bot server (which is also our secondary world server), which runs Microsoft Windows.
Will your servers go down if the power goes out?
No, our servers will stay online even when an extended power outage
occurs. All of the servers and related networking equipment are protected
by uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and two of them are also protected by industrial grade backup generators.
What if one or more of your servers goes down? What
do I do?
Don't panic. Servers and networks are very complex and they are bound
to go offline at one time or another. All servers will need to be taken
offline or rebooted every once in a while for software updates, security
fixes, configuration changes and general maintenance.
First, make sure it isn't your Internet connection that is the problem.
Try to visit a few sites in your Web browser to confirm your connection
is working properly. Second, check the EV1Servers
Network Status forum to see if there is any network maintenance
going on. Third, check our Network Information
page to determine if the server really is down or not. If the server
is down for an extended period of time, please notify
us.
Why does your site have an unusual color scheme?
We wanted our site to look different and not be another "cookie
cutter" design. Most will agree that it looks unique, but 3D Host
is a unique hosting business. Some dislike the color scheme, others
love it. The two main colors used are dark khaki (the background color
of this table) and navy (the color of hyperlinks).
The third main color
(the background color of the left sidebar) was made when we applied
a mixture of the dark khaki color and a shaded layer to the header graphic
when using a photo editing program. The color in the "3D"
part of our logo was automatically generated within another graphics
program, and we stuck with it. We feel that our hosting matters more
than which colors we did or did not decide to use on our site.

Web/Object Path Hosting Questions
Do I get my own dedicated IP address?
No, you will get a name-based account and share a single IP address
with others.
Can I host adult, hate, warez or illegal content?
Absolutely not. Please read our Acceptable Use Policy
(AUP) and Terms of Service (TOS) to see what
type of content is and is not permitted.
What control panel do you use?
We use PLESK Server Administrator 5.x. In our opinion, PLESK has a nice combination
of features to suit both new and advanced users alike. It also has a
simple, easy to use interface.
Where do I upload my HTML files and images?
You can use either FTP or PLESK's File Manager to upload files. They
should go into the httpdocs folder.
Can I create subdomains if I have my own domain name?
Unfortunately, no -- this is a limitation of PLESK. We would need to
create an entirely separate account for your subdomain. However, you
can create folders that branch out from your domain (for example, www.yourdomain.com/folder).
Can I use Server Side Includes (SSI) with my account?
Yes, SSI is fully supported. Please make sure your document/file ends
in either .shtm or .shtml, however. For other file endings, you will need to use a custom .htaccess file.
Why is there a slight pause when logging in via FTP?
There is a slight delay when users log into the server through FTP due
to a reverse DNS lookup being performed.
Do you support FrontPage extensions and ASP?
Microsoft FrontPage 1998, 2000, and 2002 extensions should work fine.
ASP is supported via a module.
Do I get my own CGI-BIN?
Yes, you will have access to your own CGI-BIN. You will be able to run
Perl scripts with .cgi and .pl extensions. Make sure to upload your
scripts in ASCII mode and set (chmod) their permissions correctly.
What is the correct path to Perl?
#!/usr/bin/perl
Can I use PHP on my account?
Yes, you can use PHP 4.x on your account. If you'd like to know the
exact version we have installed on our server, please contact
us.
Can I use MySQL databases and phpMyAdmin?
Yes, you can use both (access their settings from the PLESK control
panel). How many MySQL databases you can setup and use depends upon
your hosting plan, however.
Do I get Telnet or SSH access?
Sorry, you do not have access to Telnet or SSH on your hosting account.
What happens if I exceed my bandwidth or disk space
limit?
If you exceed your monthly bandwidth/transfer limit, you will be charged
an overage fee of $1.00 USD per GB per month. If you exceed your monthly
disk space quota, you will be charged an overage fee of $0.75 USD per
250 MB of space. If the problem persists, please upgrade your account
to another plan with more bandwidth and/or disk space, or risk your
account being suspended or terminated.
Do you have a test file I can download to measure server speed?
You can download an 11.6 MB test file here.
This can be used to determine how fast our Web/OP server can send you
a file at one particular point in time. Depending upon the time of download,
speeds may vary due to peak usage or general Internet congestion. You
can also visit our Internet
Movie Project (IMP) mirror here
to get a sense of download speed.

Active Worlds Hosting Questions
What is ActiveWorlds?
Please click here for more information about
ActiveWorlds.
What version of the world server are you using?
We try to run the most recent version of the Active Worlds world server. When a new non-beta build or stable version is released
(for both Linux and Windows platforms), we try to have it updated within forty-eight hours. Other universes/galaxies
may require us to use a different version.
How often do you backup world data?
World databases (attributes, terrain and property) are automatically
archived onto an external storage device twice daily (every twelve hours).
Manual backups are done at least once per week and are stored separate
from the server.
Do you offer object path hosting?
Yes, we do offer object path hosting. Please click here
for more information.
Can I lease/rent an already made object path from you?
Sorry, but we do not offer this service at this time. We may be able
to offer this in the future, given enough interest. Please contact us if you are interested in this.
Can you host my trial world?
No ActiveWorlds hosting provider can host trial worlds. All trial worlds
are hosted by AWI. More information about trial worlds can be found
here.
Can you host my 3D Homepage?
No, all 3D Homepages are hosted by AWI. More info about them can be
found here.
Can I purchase worlds from you directly instead of
from AWI?
We only sell world hosting, not worlds themselves. Since we are not
an official reseller or affiliate of ActiveWorlds, we can't sell worlds.
We recommend you purchase your world directly from AWI.
Do you host gaming (paintball, RPG, etc.) bots/worlds?
Yes, but only if the maximum world user limit is five or less. The main
reason we have a limit cap is because these types of bots and worlds
generally consume the most bandwidth. We believe hosting these types
of things can impact our other customers. For example, instead of hosting
maybe one or two paintball or RPG bots/worlds, we could better use the
bandwidth available to us by hosting four or five "normal"
or regular bots/worlds. Yes, they really can take up that much bandwidth.
Do you host bots/worlds in other universes besides
ActiveWorlds?
Yes, we can host bots and worlds within any English speaking universe
or galaxy that is based on AW technology, including ActiveWorlds,
OuterWorlds, Dreamland Park,
CyberNet Worlds and MP3D. However, if we
find out that the universe or galaxy your bot or world resides in is
"cracked" or illegal, we will cease hosting it.
